A team of the Eastern Aegean Basin Directorate – Plovdiv conducted an on-site inspection immediately after receiving information about the accumulated asphalt waste on the banks of the Tundzha River, at the exit of the village of Krushare, Sliven Municipality.

It was established that the waste asphalt is accumulated between the abutments of the old and operating bridge on the republican road II 53 Sliven – Yambol. At the time of the inspection, the asphalt was sliding down the river embankment towards the riverbed. The presence of the waste near the water body is a prerequisite for deteriorating meteorological conditions – heavy rains and high water crossings, to cause a large part of it to slide into the riverbed and lead to flooding of the adjacent territories.

The responsible institutions – the Road Infrastructure Agency, Sliven District Administration, and Sliven Municipality – were immediately informed, with instructions to take the appropriate measures to remove the asphalt waste as soon as possible.

A subsequent on-site inspection was carried out by experts from the Basin Directorate together with representatives of the Sliven District Road Administration and the local authorities. The basin directorate has additionally given instructions to be informed in writing about the actions taken to remove the accumulated waste. The implementation of the given instructions will be monitored by the directorate until the end of the week.
