The Regional Inspectorate of Environment and Water – Pernik returned a Hermann’s tortoise into a natural habitat

Experts from the Regional Inspectorate of Environment and Water (RIEW) - Pernik reacted immediately in response to a signal for a tortoise found in a yard in the city.

 It concerned an alive adult specimen of the Testudo hermanni tortoise.

 The animal has been released into a suitable natural habitat - in the BG0002089 "Noevtsi" protected area under the Birds Directive, which overlaps with a protected area under the Habitats Directive.

 Hermann’s tortoise is a protected species of the "terrestrial tortoise" (Testudinidae) family, listed in the Red Book of Bulgaria as an endangered species.
