The application deadline for the European Union Natura 2000 Network Award in 2024 is now extended to 12 October 2023.

The award is given for excellence in the management of Natura 2000 protected areas that demonstrates the added value of the nature conservation network for local communities and economies across the EU. The award highlights good practices in the Natura 2000 protected areas.

Conserving biodiversity and habitats is an extraordinary challenge that requires the strategic efforts of institutions, organizations, businesses, and individuals for the future of nature to the benefit of society.

Candidates can compete in five categories:

  • Land protection;
  • Marine conservation;
  • Awareness raising and communication;
  • Socio-economic benefits;
  • Cross-border cooperation.

For each category, criteria and detailed information on good practices, as well as application guidelines are published on the following link: https://environment.ec.europa.eu/topics/nature-and-biodiversity/natura-2000-award/selection-and-evaluation_en

Public or private organisations that contribute to the management of Natura 2000 protected areas can participate. The call of encouragement to them is: Make sure you apply now to get the recognition you deserve for your achievements and help so that others discover Natura 2000 and all its benefits.

The winners will be honoured and rewarded at an official Natura 2000 award ceremony to be held in Brussels in May 2024.
