The European Commission (EC) has announced the nominations for this year’s LIFE Awards for Excellence in Nature, Environment and Climate Action. The project “Habitats  Free of Invasive Alien Species” by the Foundation “Information and Nature Conservation” is one of the three nominated in the field “Nature and Biodiversity” from all the projects from the 27 EU Member States, which end their implementation in 2023.

The European Commission’s LIFE Program awards aim to draw the attention of the nearly 450 million residents of EU countries to the value of nature and generate their support for its conservation.

Each year, two awards are handed out to projects in the field of biodiversity and nature - one determined by a jury of experts and one by the vote of the general public from all Member States.

The Bulgarian project nominated supports the maintenance and conservation of four of the most valuable and threatened natural habitat types in Bulgaria and Europe, which are located in three protected areas of the European ecological network NATURA 2000 in Central Bulgaria. The results from its implementation, which have been highly appreciated by the LIFE Program, also contribute to the reduction of alien plant species invasive to the territory of the country.
