A pre-accession review by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development's (OECD) Chemicals and Biotechnology Committee (CBC) was conducted, whereby the Committee decided that Bulgaria meets the organisation's high environmental standards under all 19 OECD Council Acts related to chemicals management and control of major accident hazards.

The Chairman of the CBC informed Bulgaria that on the basis of its assessment, the CBC has decided to conclude its accession review and expressed appreciation for Bulgaria's excellent cooperation during the review, as well as for the country's continued engagement in the work of the Committee. The CBC is the first OECD Committee under which Bulgaria has acceded to all 19 Council Acts of the Organisation.

The Committee expressed its positive assessment of Bulgaria's performance, noting that the legal, institutional, and policy aspects of the Bulgarian chemical and biotechnology management system cover all the main requirements of the OECD legal instruments.

Compliance with OECD legal instruments and core principles is a prerequisite for membership in the organisation and the success achieved represents a significant step towards full compliance with OECD standards.
