Deputy Prime Minister for Climate Policy and Minister of Environment and Water Borislav Sandov signed the intergovernmental Declaration on Children, Youth and Climate Action. Bulgaria is the tenth country in Europe to sign the document. Thus our country committs to ensuring that priorities for children and young people are taken into consideration within climate action.

“Every effort to limit the carbon footprint now and prepare young people for tomorrow's challenges by showing them a new way to treat nature with respect is a big step towards a better, more secure and greener future,” noted Minister Sandov. He added that if we do not make these efforts now, it is children and young people who will have to remedy the mistakes of the past and deal with the severe consequences of climate change.

UNICEF Representative in Bulgaria Christina de Bruyne welcomed the signing of the declaration and said the document demonstrates the countries’ commitment to recognizing and considering the needs, rights and perspectives of children and young people within climate change policies at all levels. “The signing of the declaration by Bulgaria is an important step that empowers children and young people as influential drivers of change. “The climate crisis is a crisis of children’s rights,” she said.

One of the aims of the declaration is to increase the participation by children and young people in the processes of climate change mitigation by raising awareness about these, as well as to increase their knowledge and skills for contributing to a safe and sustainable future.
