Dams are 20% fuller compared to volume in March 2025
30 Mar, 2026 | 13:43- According to NIMH data, precipitation it to continue until the end of the week
As of March 30, 2026, the amount of available stored volumes in complex and significant dams is 4888.7 million cubic meters, which represents 74.80% of their total volume and is approximately 20% more than the volume as of March 2025. The percentage of filling of complex and significant dams is the highest for the last 7 years in terms of the values reported for the same calendar period.
With 100% full volume are the dams "Kamchia", "Yasna Polyana", "Assenovets", and "Pchelina", and at over 90% are the dams "Srechenska Bara", "Hristo Smirnenski", "Borovitsa", "Studena", "Domlyan", "Alexander Stamboliyski", "Krichim", and "Ivaylovgrad".
In connection with the onset of the spring season and the expected high water level, if necessary, the companies managing the complex and significant dams are taking measures to ensure free volumes through preventive release of water masses in order to absorb the increased inflow and maintain the levels within optimal limits.
According to data from the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (NIMH), by the end of this week, rainfall will continue, with significant amounts in Southern Bulgaria and the mountainous regions on Thursday night. At the end of the week, there will be more significant temporary breaks in the clouds and precipitation in fewer places.
Today (30.03) river levels in most of the river basins will decrease, and as a result of runoff there will be increases in the lower reaches of the main rivers. On 01.04 and 02.04, as a result of the precipitation, increases in river levels are expected. Water quantities will be below the thresholds for attention.
The Ministry of Environment and Water (MOEW) reminds local authorities to implement the measures envisaged in the Flood Risk Management Plans 2022 - 2027 and to monitor the current hydrometeorological information and forecasts for hazardous phenomena published on the official website of the Ministry.
The MOEW manages water resources in 52 significant and complex dams.
