• For tomorrow, June 2, the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (NIMH) has issued a first-degree warning (yellow code) for intense and significant rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and hail in 23 regions of the country

As of June 1, 2026, the total volume of water stored in complex and major dams is 5316.4 million cubic meters, representing 81.34% of their total capacity. The full volume rate of complex and major dams is the highest in the last ten years compared to figures reported for the same calendar period.

The “Yovkovtsi,” “Kamchia,” and “Asenovets” reservoirs are 100% full, while the “Srechenska Bar,” “Hristo Smirnenski,” “Ticha,” “Yasna Polyana,” “Borovitsa,” “Studena,” “Sopot,” “Domlyan,” “Topolnitsa,” “Pchelina,” “Alexander Stamboliyski,” “Belmeken,” “Vacha,” “Krichim,” “Kardzhali,” and “Ivaylovgrad” – at over 90%. The “Yovkovtsi,” “Kamchia,” “Asenovets,” “Pchelina,” and “Pancharevo” reservoirs are overflowing.

In connection with the onset of spring and the expected high water levels, the companies managing the complex and major reservoirs are taking measures, as necessary, to ensure available capacity by preemptively releasing water to accommodate increased inflows and maintain water levels within optimal limits.

According to data from the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology, short-lived showers accompanied by thunderstorms are expected today in many parts of Western Bulgaria and the Eastern regions, with rainfall amounts reaching up to 15–20 mm in some areas. Tomorrow, rain and thunderstorms are expected in many parts of the country. The precipitation will be more significant and intense in the Central Balkan Mountains and Southwestern Bulgaria, where conditions are also favorable for hail. Precipitation amounts will be at15–35 mm, with up to about 50 mm in isolated areas. Through the end of this week and into the beginning of next week, sunny weather will prevail in the morning across most regions, but around and after noon and through midnight, cumulus and cumulonimbus clouds will develop. Short-lived, temporarily intense rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms is expected. Precipitation amounts will range from 15 mm to 50 mm. Hailstorms are also expected.

Today and over the next three days, river levels will rise as a result of rainfall in the afternoon and evening hours, with more significant rises occurring in mountainous areas. Today, more significant increases are expected in the watersheds West of the Ogosta River, and on June 4 in the watersheds of the rivers West of the Yantra River. Water levels will remain below the warning thresholds.

The Ministry of Environment and Water reminds local authorities to implement the measures outlined in the 2022–2027 Flood Risk Management Plans and to monitor the latest hydrometeorological information and forecasts for hazardous events, published on the ministry’s official website.
