The Deputy Minister of Environment and Water Nikolay Sidzhimov visited the Persin Island in the municipality of Belene together with representatives of the Regional Inspectorate for Environment and Water - Pleven and the Directorate of the “Persina” Nature Park.

The purpose of the visit was to observe the effect of the operation of the facilities that connect the Danube River with the Pischensko marsh and provide water to maintain the wetlands on the territory of the nature park.

There are several protected areas on the territory of the Persin Island - the part of the “Persina” Nature Park that includes the “Persin Marshes” Nature Reserve and the “Persin East” and “Persin” protected areas. The maintained reserve was created to preserve typical Danube marshes and typical marsh vegetation, together with the waterfowl that inhabit them.

During the visit, waterfowl were observed in the Pischensko marsh (part of the maintained reserve) - swans, Dalmatian pelicans, coots, small and large cormorants, mallards, herons, etc.

On the territory of the island there are also two remarkable trees of the Black Poplar species with a trunk circumference of more than 7 m., which are to be declared centenary trees.
