• Over the next two days, river levels are expected to rise across much of the country due to anticipated rainfall, but water levels will remain below warning thresholds

As of 22 June 22 2026, the total volume of water stored in complex and major dams is 5254.3 million cubic meters, representing 80.39% of their total capacity.

The following reservoirs are more than 90% full: “Srechenska Bara,” “Hristo Smirnenski,” “Yovkovtsi,” “Ticha,” “Kamchia,” “Yasna Polyana,” “Asenovets,” “Borovitsa,” “Studena,” “Karagol,” “Domlyan,” “Pchelina,” “Belmeken,” “Vacha,” “Krichim,” “Kardzhali,” “Ivaylovgrad,” and “Rozov Kladenets.” The “Pchelina” and “Pancharevo” reservoirs are overflowing.

Given the high water levels in most of the major and significant dams, the operating companies have been notified of the need to take timely action to ensure sufficient free capacity in the ones they manage, in order to prevent harmful effects from the water.

According to data from the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology, this afternoon there will be brief showers in isolated areas of Western Bulgaria. During the first half of the night, there will be brief showers in isolated areas of the Western regions. Tomorrow afternoon, the Western half of the country will experience brief, temporarily intense rain showers accompanied by thunderstorms and conditions conducive to hail. Precipitation amounts: 5-10 mm, with up to 15-20 mm in some areas. On Wednesday, many areas in Western and Central Bulgaria will experience brief showers accompanied by thunderstorms. Later in the evening, brief showers will also occur in the Northeastern regions. On Thursday, many areas will experience brief showers and thunderstorms. By the end of the week, the likelihood of precipitation will decrease.

Today and over the next two days, due to the expected rainfall, river levels are forecast to rise across much of the country. Decreases or insignificant changes are expected only in the Black Sea basin. Water levels will remain below the warning thresholds.

The Ministry of Environment and Water (MOEW) reminds local authorities to implement the measures outlined in the 2022-2027 Flood Risk Management Plans and to monitor the latest hydrometeorological information and forecasts for hazardous events, published on the ministry’s official website.
