Four centuries-old trees declared protected
18 Aug, 2025 | 14:16By order, the Minister of Environment and Water Manol Genov, declared four centuries-old trees protected.
Two of them are of the species Cer oak (Quercus cerris) and approximately 100 years old. One is located in the land of the village of Slatina, Lovech Municipality, of 18 m high and has a trunk circumference of 2.80 m, and the other - in the land of the city of Pleven, of 20 m high and has a trunk circumference also of 2.80 m.
The order of the Minister also includes a centuries-old tree of the species Summer oak (Quercus robur), which is approximately 200 years old, with a trunk circumference of 4.80 m. It is located in the land of the village of Staroseltsi, Iskar Municipality, Pleven Region.
The initiative to declare the three trees protected came from the Regional Inspectorate for Environment and Water - Pleven.
In the land of the town of Byala Slatina there is a centuries-old black mulberry tree (Morus nigra) of approximately 250 years old, with a height of about 10 m and a trunk circumference of 4.75 m. The proposal for declaration was submitted by the Association of Parks in Bulgaria.
The declaration of the trees as protected prohibits the uprooting, felling, pruning, breaking branches, injuring the stems and any other actions that would lead to the destruction, damage, or deterioration of the physical condition of the trees.
The order is to be published in the State Gazette, after which the trees will be entered in the Register of Centennial Trees in Bulgaria according to the requirements of the Biodiversity Act and designated as centennial trees.
The preservation of centennial or remarkable trees through their timely protection is one of the priorities of the Ministry of Environment and Water. A large part of these trees, distinguished by their remarkable shapes and sizes, have withstood time and natural elements, and have been preserved thanks to the commitment and public awareness of local communities.
