Green infrastructure to help protect animal species
05 Nov, 2025 | 10:15Measures to protect certain animal species will be implemented under a project funded under the Environment Programme 2021–2027 in protected areas from the Natura 2000 network.
The main objective of the project is to improve the connectivity between habitats fragmented as a result of human activity and to provide safe corridors for the movement of species, such as the spiny-tailed, spiny-backed and Caspian turtles, as well as the striped, spotted, and leopard seals.
The corridors will be implemented in road sections falling within the scope of the protected areas "Kamchia", "Gradina Beach - Zlatna Ribka", "Derventski Vazvishenia", "Obnova - Karaman Dola", "Chengene Skele Bay", "Nikopol Plateau", "Atanasovsko Lake", "Mandra - Poda" and "Strandzha".
The project envisages the construction of “reptile passage” type facilities using a trenchless method (horizontal drilling), without changing the route and without affecting the existing road structure. Guide fences for reptiles will also be installed, starting from the entrances of the passages in both directions of the roads.
It is planned to repair existing facilities – ramps, ditches, and entrances, as well as to improve their passability by clearing vegetation, sediments and other obstacles.
The total cost of the project under the Environment Programme 2021–2027 is 1.5 million BGN and the implementation period is two years. The beneficiary of the project is the Road Infrastructure Agency.
