Kardzhali, Montana, Asenovgrad, and Gorna Oryahovitsa green urban areas for cleaner air
01 Dec, 2025 | 15:00The municipalities of Kardzhali, Montana, Asenovgrad, and Gorna Oryahovitsa are starting the implementation of projects for the construction of green infrastructure within the procedure "Green Measures for Cleaner Air" under the Environment Program 2021-2027. The main objective of the projects is to improve the quality of atmospheric air on the territory of the municipalities by reducing emissions of fine particulate matter (PM10).
The activities are aimed at limiting the sources of secondary dusting and purifying the air naturally by expanding green areas in urban environments and planting species with the highest degree of PM10 capture. It is planned to implement landscaping in publicly accessible properties in the urbanized territories of the cities.
In Kardzhali, 12 terrains have been selected, in which alleys of concrete perforated plates on a grass joint will be built, irrigation systems will be installed and tree and shrub groups, hedges and solitaires will be planted. The duration of the project is 33 months, and its value is 4.4 million leva.
In Montana, green infrastructure will be built on 24 terrains with excessive pollution with fine dust particles - inter-block spaces, representing "mud patches", properties around schools, kindergartens, and along busy boulevards. Facilities will also be installed to limit car parking on green areas. The duration of the project is 30 months, and it amounts to 3.7 million leva.
In Asenovgrad, large-scale landscaping will also be implemented - green belt zones, green walls, landscaping with tree and shrub species, grassing, etc. The implementation of the project will significantly improve the urban environment. It will be implemented for 22 months, and the financing under the Environment Program amounts to 4.8 million leva.
The Municipality of Gorna Oryahovitsa will also invest in plant species with the highest degree of efficiency for reducing PM10 emissions from secondary dusting by purifying the air naturally, and thereby improving the living conditions for citizens. The project budget is 2.7 million leva, for the duration of 30 months.
The projects contribute to the implementation of the country's commitments in the Air sector and the achievement of goals arising from European and national legislation.
All residents of Kardzhali, Montana, Asenovgrad, and Gorna Oryahovitsa will feel the positive effect of the implemented measures.
