Today Deputy Prime Minister for Climate Policy and Minister of Environment and Water Borislav Sandov met with Susie Denison, Director of the European Power Program at the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR). The two discussed Bulgaria’s role in European climate diplomacy and aspects of the transition to energy and resource independence in the context of the war in Ukraine.

“The war in Ukraine and the risks associated with the supply of fossil fuels from Russia put us in a situation of urgent need to accelerate the energy transition to a low-carbon economy, to rapid and wider penetration of renewable energy sources, and particularly to higher resource and energy efficiency. The way we use resources today is a matter of national and European security. Decarbonization is no longer just an issue of climate change, but also of peace in Europe. Bulgaria has potential and must develop energy based on renewable sources. Wind power in the Black Sea is emerging as an important aspect of this independence,” Minister Borislav Sandov summarized the highlights from the meeting.

ECFR presented its work on “The Power Atlas”, an orientation tool in the global realities of climate change. The publication traces how climate change and the transition to clean energy are changing power dynamics in the world.

The interactive maps with current statistics from the Power Atlas are available online on the ECFR website.
