Minister Karamfilova discussed actions taken by Bulgaria for hosting COP 29 with representatives of the Embassy of the United Kingdom and several ministries

The Minister of Environment and Water Rositsa Karamfilova participated in an informal meeting organized by His Excellency Dr. Rob Dixon, Ambassador of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland to Bulgaria. The meeting was held in the context of Bulgaria’s bid to host and chair the 29th UNFCCC Conference (COP 29) in 2024. It was attended by representatives of the presidential institution and the ministries of energy, foreign affairs, tourism, innovation and growth.

“We are fully aware that the presidency of the COP is not an easy initiative and it takes courage to undertake such a commitment, especially in the current challenging time,” said Minister Karamfilova to the participants in the meeting.

His Excellency David Moran, Regional Ambassador for Energy Security and Climate for Europe and Central Asia at the Department of Foreign Affairs of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland presented his experience of involvement in the preparation and organization of COP 26 in Glasgow in 2021. Vews were exchanged on the challenges, opportunities, and best practices for organizing events of a similar scale.

Minister Karamfilova expressed her high appreciation for the shared experience by Ambassador David Moran and introduced the participants to ongoing issues related to the election procedure within the framework of the UNFCCC for hosting and chairing the Conference in 2024.

She presented information on the actions taken by Bulgaria to prepare our country for COP 29. During the discussion, it was noted that despite the challenging geopolitical and economic situation on a global scale, the ambition of our country to host COP 29 remains high and preparations are underway at an accelerated pace.
