The Minister of the Environment and Water Rositsa Karamfilova ordered immediate actions to protect and consereve the Baikusheva Pine, after checking today on site the condition of the oldest centennial coniferous tree in Bulgaria.

The inspection was initiated after a report by the director of the park Rosen Banenski to the leadership of the ministry that a branch from the century-old tree with a diameter of about 40 cm had been broken.

During her visit, Minister Karamfilova, together with the teams of the National Nature Protection Directorate, the Pirin National Park Directorate, and experts from the Institute of Forestry at the Bulgarian Academy of Science, the Forestry University and the Forest Protection Station - Sofia drew up an action plan which foresees that the overall condition of the tree will be studied. Scientists should then make reasoned proposals for specific actions in the short and long term.

Minister Karamfilova expressed her firm opinion that a detailed action plan is needed to protect the tree, with concrete deadlines and persons of responsibility. “Scientists should propose an option on which we can work jointly. I believe that with experience and scientific knowledge, you will help to identify the suitable approach for such a serious situation in which we find ourselves,” she said, emphasizing the need to carry out regular monitoring of the condition of the tree.

“Every process must be managed so that there is room to react. We cannot afford to take even a small risk when it comes to protecting such a national symbol. Baikusheva Pine is a priceless natural treasure. It is also the most visited dendrological site in the country,” added Minister Karamfilova.

Various parts of the tree are to be examined to check the condition of the remaining branches and its overall health. The first screening will give an idea about the putrefactive processes taking place and what their relative proportion is.

The Baikusheva Pine will be examined with a specialized technique - a tomograph and a resistograph, by specialists with solid experience in tree maintenance, which will provide a starting point for the subsequent actions for the preservation of the tree.

The oldest coniferous tree will be able to be seen by tourists at a distance, and access will remain restricted until measures are taken to ensure complete the safety of visitors.

Given the importance of the Baykusheva Pine, the public will be informed about any action taken to protect the tree.
