Minister Manol Genov announces protection of four centuries-old trees
21 Jan, 2026 | 14:25By order of the Minister of Environment and Water, four new century-old trees have been declared protected.
Two of them are approximately 250 years old. One is of the white willow species (Salix alba), located in the "Ragi" area in the land of the village of Oslen Krivodol, Mezdra Municipality. It has a trunk circumference of 3.90 m and a height of about 20 m, and the proposal for the declaration was submitted by the mayor of the municipality of Mezdra.
The other 250-year-old century-old tree is of the species Cer (Quercus cerris), located in the land of the village of Tankovo, Stambolovo Municipality, Haskovo Region, has a trunk circumference of 3.77 m and a height of about 16 m. The proposal for the declaration was submitted by the mayor of the municipality of Stambolovo.
A centuries-old tree of approximately 110 years old, of the summer oak species (Quercus robur), located in the land of the village of Staro Selo, Tutrakan Municipality, Silistra Region, has also been declared protected. It has a trunk circumference of 4.05 m. The proposal for the declaration was submitted by the director of the Silistra Regional Road Administration, on whose territory the centuries-old tree is located.
The Minister's order also includes a fourth century-old tree of the Blagun species (Quercus frainetto), approximately 100 years old, with a trunk circumference of 4.05 m and a height of about 23 m. It is located in the land of the village of Borov Dol, Tvarditsa Municipality, Sliven Region, and the proposal for its declaration as protected was submitted by the private co-owners of the property on whose territory it is located.
The declaration of the four trees protected prohibits to uproot, cut down, prune, break branches, injure the stems and any other actions that would lead to the destruction, damage or deterioration of the physiological condition of the trees.
The order is to be published in the State Gazette, after which the trees will be entered in the registers according to the requirements of the Biodiversity Act and designated as century-old trees.
The preservation of century-old or remarkable trees through their timely protection is one of the priorities of the Ministry of Environment and Water. A large part of these trees, distinguished by their remarkable shapes and sizes, withstood time and natural elements, have been preserved thanks to the commitment and public awareness of local communities.
