The Minister of Environment and Water Rositsa Karamfilova participated in the Ninth Ministerial Conference “Environment for Europe”, which is held today and tomorrow in Cyprus and marks 30 years of environmental cooperation in the pan-European region. More than 1,000 delegates from over 60 countries will participate. The first ministerial conference was held in 1991 in the Czech Republic, and the third was hosted by Bulgaria in Sofia in 1995.

In her remarks, Minister Karamfilova said that at the Third Ministerial Conference in Sofia, the ministers emphasized one basic principle, i.e. the need to integrate environmental considerations into all sectoral policies, so that economic growth takes place in accordance with the principles of sustainable development. “I am happy to say that this principle is gaining more and more ground and we can now see it at the core of current European politics. This is a great success, but we must not stop our work within this forum. We are witnessing threats to humanity, ecosystems and biodiversity, which still need to be resolved,” she added.

After the conference, Minister Karamfilova spoke with the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment of Cyprus Kostas Kadis.

The event continues tomorrow with panels on sustainable infrastructure and the application of the principles of circular economy to sustainable tourism.
