The Minister of Environment and Water Rositsa Karamfilova met with the Ambassador of France in Sofia H.E. Joel Meyer.

The two discussed the upcoming high-level meetings focusing on the fight against plastic pollution, which will take place on 26 and 27 May in Paris, just before the Second Session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee to End Plastic Pollution (29 May-2 June 2023).

The conversation focused on the need to take urgent global action to end plastic pollution to protect human health, biodiversity and the climate and address the triple environmental crisis.

Negotiations to develop an international legally binding agreement to end plastic pollution are underway in implementation of a 2022 UN Environment Assembly resolution – “Ending plastic pollution: towards an international legally binding instrument.”

Bulgaria is actively involved in this process. Our country joined last November the High Ambition Coalition to End Plastic Pollution, established to drive forward the negotiations in developing a legally binding instrument based on a comprehensive and circular approach that addresses the entire life cycle of plastics.
