  • The forecast for the Northwestern Black Sea until July 6 remains favorable.

The Ministry of Environment and Water (MOEW) conducts regular monitoring of sea water after the destruction of the wall of the Nova Kakhovka dam, located on the Dnieper River in Ukraine.

The latest data from the numerical modelling of the Centre for Integrated Coastal Zone Management and Monitoring of the Naval University “N.Y. Vaptsarov” show no pollution of the Bulgarian water area with any potential contaminants due to the incident.

The forecast for the Northwestern part of the Black Sea until 6 July remains favorable, with potential contaminants circulating in Ukrainian waters.

The Black Sea Basin Directorate and the Regional Laboratory - Varna with the Executive Environmental Agency conduct weekly monitoring of the state of Black Sea waters at three additional sites in the coastal zone, which have been selected in response to the new situation - Durankulak coast, Shabla coast, and Kaliakra coast.

On 26 June, the results from the testing of samples taken on 19.06.2023 in the Bulgarian Black Sea area were also released. More information can be found in our previous newsletter. An assessment of the trends related to the observed water conditions can be made after the accumulation of data from at least four measurements.

On 27 June 2023, the Black Sea Basin Directorate carried out sampling at three sites in inland marine waters. The first survey results are expected within 10 days.

The MOEW is in constant exchange of information with the Ukrainian, Moldovan, and Romanian authorities on potential pollution of the Black Sea waters. The radiation background in the Odessa region is within normal limits. The Bulgarian Embassy in Kiev informs about this in its regular updates to the MOEW. Current information on the results of the measurements is provided to the competent institutions and the public in due time.

The monitoring of sea water is coordinated with the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Tourism in order to ensure a peaceful tourist season.
