  • The project will ensure the necessary infrastructure for separate collection and utilization of green biodegradable waste in the municipalities of Omurtag, Kotel, Varbitsa, and Antonovo

The Minister of Environment and Water Manol Genov and the Mayor of Omurtag Dzhuneit Yonuzov signed an agreement for the building of a regional system for separate collection and recycling of biodegradable waste. The project will provide the necessary infrastructure for separate collection and utilization of green biodegradable household waste in the municipalities of Omurtag, Kotel, Varbitsa, and Antonovo.

The total investment amount is nearly 2.9 million BGN. The grant provided by the Environment Programme 2021-2027 is over 2.3 million BGN.

The newly created system will include a composting plant with a minimum capacity of 2852 tons per year, using the "rotating drum bioreactor" technology. For the effective separate collection of biodegradable waste, the project envisages the purchase of 468 containers, each with a capacity of 1.1 cubic meters, which will be located at key locations in all settlements on the territory of the Regional Waste Management System (RWMS) – Omurtag region.

The successful implementation of the project will solve one of the main problems on the territory of the RWMS – Omurtag, related to the high percentage of landfilled biodegradable waste in the region. The construction of the composting plant will extend the operational life of the Regional Non-Hazardous Waste Landfill – Omurtag by significantly reducing the annual amounts of landfilled waste. The socio-economic benefits of the project implementation are aimed at improving the quality of the environment for residents in the four municipalities by reducing harmful emissions associated with waste landfilling. A new type of waste management service will be provided for residents, businesses, and public institutions in Omurtag, Kotel, Varbitsa, and Antonovo.

The project is implemented within the framework of the procedure "Measures for the construction, expansion and/or upgrading of municipal/regional systems for separate collection and recycling of biodegradable waste", priority "Waste" of the Environment Program 2021-2027.

The planned period for the implementation of the activities is 30 months.
