On March 22 we mark the World Water Day under the Moto “Water for Peace”

World Water Day, celebrated every year on 22 March, brings together tens of thousands of people around the world to raise awareness and draw attention to taking action to the address water and sanitation crises. The initiative is coordinated by the United Nations Water Access Mechanism (UN-Water), which is managed by one or more members and partners with a defined mandate.

"Water for Peace" is the moto of the international campaign in 2024. Water can create peace or cause conflict. When it is scarce or contaminated, or when people have unequal or no access to water resources, tensions can arise between different communities and countries. More than 3 billion people around the world depend on watersheds that cross national borders. Of the 153 countries that share rivers, lakes, and aquifers with their neighbors, only 24 countries report having cooperative agreements in place for all shared waters.

The impact of climate change is growing and this creates an urgent need for countries to unite around the protection and conservation of one of our most precious resources - water.

The regional offices of the Ministry of Environment and Water throughout the country are carrying out various initiatives for World Water Day in partnership with educational institutions and NGOs in the different regions. You can join in by checking them out HERE.
