Over 150 plant and animal species have been depicted during the BioBlitz initiative in Belasitsa
29 May, 2025 | 16:13In the period 17–25 May 2025, the BioBlitz initiative "Belasitsa 2025" was held on the territory of the Belasitsa Mountain, organized by the Regional Inspectorate for Environment and Water - Blagoevgrad on initiative by the Ministry of Environment and Water.
The event was part of the celebration of the European Natura 2000 Day - 21 May, and is implemented at the call of the Directorate General Environment of the European Commission, in partnership with the Observation.org platform - an international platform for registering observations of wild animals, plants, and mushrooms.
Bulgaria joined the initiative through the protected area BG0000167 "Belasitsa", designated under the Habitats Directive and located within the territorial scope of the Regional Inspectorate for Environment and Water - Blagoevgrad.
The aim of the BioBlitz initiative is to encourage citizens to discover, photograph, and share observations of biodiversity in their regions. The participants searched for and documented as many plant and animal species as possible in certain areas of Belasitsa. The most records are on the trails to the Belasitsa and Kongur huts, around the Leshnishki waterfall, along the Health Alley, on the road to the former Paprenitsa outpost, to the Halkata area, all near Petrich. There are records from the routes from the village of Klyuch to the Mangaro waterfall, from the village of Skrut to the Dabitsata waterfall, as well as from the village of Yavornitsa to the Yavornishki waterfall. There are single records from the area of the village of Kolarovo.
The collected information is registered on the Observation.org website, which uses automatic species recognition from photographs. After the initial entry, an expert team confirms the reliability of the data.
Representatives of the Regional Inspectorate for Environment, Water and Forestry - Blagoevgrad, Department of Natura 2000 Network Management, and many students from the Young Mountaineer Association, the “Anton Popov” Secondary School and the “Asen Zlatarov” Secondary School - Petrich participated in BioBlitz Belasitsa 2025. Numerous individual participations of nature lovers were also registered. Despite the active mobilization, unfavorable weather conditions prevented the participation of some of the schools that had previously announced they would join.
The final results of the census are yet to be summarized after verification by the platform team. Currently, the automatic system has reported 153 observed species, and 332 observations by 15 observers.
The BioBlitz Belasitsa 2025 initiative is an effort to raise public awareness and participation in the protection of biodiversity within the framework of the European ecological network Natura 2000.
