  • Companies managing complex and significant dams are maintaining levels within optimal limits

As of 20 April 2026, the total volume of water stored in complex and significant dams stands at 5 144.6 million cubic metres amounting to 78.71% of their total capacity.

The Kamchia, Asenovets, and Pchelina dams are at 100% full, whilst the Srechenska Bar, Hristo Smirnenski, Yovkovtsi, Ticha, Yasna Polyana, Borovitsa, Studena, Domlyan, Alexander Stamboliyski, Krichim, and Kardzhali at over 90%. The Kamchia, Asenovets, Pchelina and Pancharevo dams are overflowing.

In view of the onset of the spring season and the expected high water levels, where necessary, the companies managing the complex and significant dams are taking measures to ensure available capacity by pre-emptively releasing water to accommodate the increased inflow and maintain levels within optimal limits.

According to the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (NIMH), this afternoon and until midnight there will be brief showers accompanied by thunderstorms, mainly in the Eastern and mountainous regions. Rain is also expected over the next three days in many parts of the country, with the NIMH issuing a first-degree warning (yellow code) for significant rainfall on 21 April 2026 in 14 regions across Southern Bulgaria. Rain is expected to stop and temperatures to rise by the end of the week.

Today (20 April) and over the next two days, river levels in the monitored rivers are expected to rise as a result of the rainfall. Water levels will remain below the warning thresholds.

The MOEW reminds local authorities to implement the measures in the Flood Risk Management Plans 2022–2027 and to monitor the latest hydrometeorological information and forecasts for hazardous events, published on the Ministry’s official website.

The MOEW manages water resources in 52 major and complex dams.
