The Minister of Environment and Water Manol Genov and the Mayor of Sofia Municipality Vasil Terziev signed a contract for the construction of green infrastructure under the procedure "Green Measures for Cleaner Air".

The main objective of the project is to improve the quality of atmospheric air on the territory of the municipality of the capital city by reducing emissions of fine particulate matter (PM10). The activities are aimed at limiting sources of secondary dust and purifying the air naturally by expanding green areas in urban environments and planting plant species with the highest degree of PM10 capture.

Within the framework of the project, 10 hectares of green infrastructure and irrigation systems will be built on the territory of Sofia Municipality.

Over 1200000 people should directly feel the impact of the implemented measures.

The project will contribute to the implementation of Bulgaria’s commitments in the "Air" sector and the achievement of goals within European and national legislation, in accordance with the 2017 Decision by the European Court of Justice for non-compliance with the norms of maximum permissible values of particulate matter in ambient air.

The total value of the investment and the grant provided by the Environment Program 2021-2027 is over 5.7 million BGN.

The project is being implemented within the framework of the "Green Measures in Urban Environment" procedure, under priority 5 "Air" of the Environment Program 2021-2027.

The planned implementation period for the project is 18 months.
