Experts from the Black Sea Region Basin Directorate - Varna conducted an inspection based on a report filed today about the pollution of the sand strip on the Kabakum - North beach.

On site, contamination with used oil products was found on the sand strip in the area under a concrete collector for the discharge of surface water. The area of the affected sand strip is approximately 300 sq. m. The suspected source of the pollution is a hotel in the area. An order has been issued to the municipality to clean up the area.

At the time of the inspection, no leakage of contaminated water was observed. The pollution originated from the coast and the sea waters were not reached. The inspection also covered zone I of the sanitary protection zone around the mineral water well R-68x, and no contamination of the water source was established.

The inspection also involved experts from the Regional Inspectorate for Environment and Water (RIEW) - Varna, the Municipality of Varna and the Ministry of Interior (MOI), whose joint actions have identified the likely source of the pollution. The Basin Directorate and RIEW - Varna will carry out subsequent control over the measures that the municipality will take to clean up the beach.
