The Basin Directorate monitors Black Sea waters for pollution by the war in Ukraine
04 Jun, 2025 | 15:41Teams of the Black Sea Basin Directorate (BSBD) – Varna and the Regional Laboratory – Varna at the External Environmental Agency carried out an inspection and sampling of the sea waters near Durankulak, Shabla, and Kaliakra.
The inspection is led by the Director of the BSBD eng. Yavor Dimitrov and is part of the intensified control on the Black Sea coast in relation to the possible consequences of military actions on the territory of Ukraine.
The samples taken will be tested for the presence of petroleum products, heavy metals, and pesticides – key indicators of pollution of the marine environment.
The main goal of the analysis is to establish whether the military conflict has an impact on the quality of sea waters in the Bulgarian Black Sea aquatoria.
The BSBD will announce the results of the sampling in a timely manner.
