The Ministry of the Environment and Water invites all interested Bulgarian towns, schools, business organisations, and non-governmental organisations to take an active part in marking European Mobility Week (EMW), which will take place again this year from 16 to 22 September. Registration to participat is available at: https://mobilityweek.eu/home/.

The European Commission’s “European Mobility Week” campaign is organised with the primary aim of encouraging European local authorities to introduce and support sustainable transport and modes of travel.

In 2026, EUROPEAN MOBILITY WEEK will retain the theme that made the last edition such a success: Mobility for All. This year’s campaign places a special emphasis on intergenerational equity, ensuring that everyone has access to sustainable transport, regardless of their income, location, gender, or abilities. At different stages of their lives, children, young people, adults and older people face challenges and barriers to mobility linked to their respective needs and abilities.

EUROPEAN MOBILITY WEEK encourages us to envisage a form of mobility in which transport systems are adapted to all age groups and meet the needs of current and future generations. Cooperation between different age groups and the use of each generation’s skills and resources can make mobility more inclusive.

Let’s work together to transform every journey and ensure mobility for all!

The Executive Environment Agency is the national coordinator for European Mobility Week in Bulgaria. The main events take place every year from 16 to 22 September, with the campaign usually concluding with the popular “Car-Free Day”.

Local authorities are encouraged to use the main week to trial innovative planning measures, promote new infrastructure and technologies, measure air quality and gather feedback from the public. Traditionally, Bulgarian municipalities have been key partners in the campaign. With more towns joining every year and its huge media visibility, European Mobility Week is widely recognised as a driving force for sustainable urban mobility.

Any local authority, school, NGO, business organisation or anyone organising an activity or activities meeting at least one of the following three criteria can take part in the campaign:

1) Organising a week of activities to raise awareness among local residents and stakeholders on the topic of sustainable urban mobility.

2) Presenting achievements over the past 12 months in the field of sustainable urban mobility.

3) Organising a car-free day, preferably coinciding with World Car-Free Day on 22 September: this involves closing one or more areas reserved for pedestrians, cyclists and public transport for at least one full day (from 1 hour before to 1 hour after official working hours).

Deadline for registration of local authorities, schools, NGOs and business organisations: 15 September 2026.
