The four basin directorates are inspecting the facilities and the conductivity of rivers and other water basins on the territory of the country that fall within the scope of their responsibilities.

Inspections, including on-site, are carried out by experts from the “Eastern Aegean Region”, “Danube Region”, “Black Sea Region”, and “West Aegean Region” directorates.

Actions by the basin directorates, including the implementation of a joint coordinated approach were undertaken on order by the Minister of Environment and Water Rositsa Karamfilova and started in the middle of the month.

Their purpose is to identify the location where actions are needed, so that responsible units will be able to take measures to prevent serious consequences from heavy rainfall and other emergency situations.

Upon the completion of the inspections, the focus will be placed on follow-up control to establish whether the competent responsible units have fulfilled the instructions provided by the Basin Directorates.

Within the framework of the current inspections, it has been requested from municipalities to provide information about already identified sections of river beds with impaired conductivity on their territory. The measures taken to ensure the conductivity of these sections of the river beds are also to be analyzed.

Administrative penalties will be imposed in the cases of establishment of lack of implementation of previous prescriptions.

At the moment, inspections are also being carried out by interdepartmental commissions under regional governors to ensure the conductivity of riverbeds beyond the regulatory boundaries of settlements. Prescriptions are issued for the identified problematic areas within the territorial scope of the directorates.

The collected information will be analyzed and actions will be taken in accord with the competences of the basin directorates under the Water Act. The institutions pertinent to river conductivity will be notified.
