• Scientific expertise will be a guiding principle in the development of sustainable environmental policies

Minister of Environment and Water Rositsa Karamfilova held a working meeting with the President of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS) Prof. Dr. Evelina Slavcheva. During the meeting, the two discussed opportunities to strengthen the partnership between the Ministry of Environment and Water and the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences in support of policies based on scientific knowledge, expert capacity, and a long-term vision for the sustainable management of natural resources.

During the discussion, the importance of active collaboration between government institutions and the scientific community in the development and implementation of environmental policies was emphasized. There was a shared understanding that sustainable solutions should be based on scientific evidence, expert analysis, and professional dialogue.

Minister Karamfilova emphasized that harnessing the scientific potential of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and the academic community is a key prerequisite for preparing high-quality strategic documents and making effective management decisions. She emphasized the need for broad expert participation and an interdisciplinary approach in developing long-term policies that balance environmental protection with the public interest and the principles of sustainable development.

The President of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences Prof. Dr. Evelina Slavcheva, expressed the Academy’s readiness to continue supporting state institutions with its scientific expertise and research capacity. She emphasized that the BAS’s broad expert capacity creates opportunities for a comprehensive and interdisciplinary approach to developing solutions on key issues of public importance.

The meeting reaffirmed the common understanding that sustainable environmental policies are developed through a partnership between institutions and the scientific community, based on scientific knowledge, professionalism, and shared responsibility.

The common goal is for decisions with long-term implications to be supported by in-depth scientific expertise, broad expert dialogue, and transparency in the process of their development.
