The Ministry of Environment and Water (MOEW) has ordered RIEW - Sofia to carry out an inspection following a report of unauthorised waste disposal near the village of Dolni Bogrov in the Kremikovtsi district. According to those who made the report, there is pollution of water bodies and adjacent areas within a protected zone of the European ecological network “Natura 2000”. A joint inspection has been organised by the Regional Inspectorate of Environment and Water - Sofia and the district administration.

During the inspection, the sites mentioned in the report - municipal public property located within the district - were surveyed. Unauthorised pollution was found, consisting of construction waste, bulky waste and end-of-life tyres, which is indeed within a “Natura 2000” zone. The pollution was observed on both sides along the entire length of a municipal road, starting from Botevgradsko Shose (opposite the ‘Eko’ petrol station) in the direction of the “Krivina” quarry.

An inspection was also carried out of the water bodies near the affected sites, on the surface of which no illegally dumped waste was found. During the inspection, no persons or machinery engaged in polluting activities were identified.

The Regional Inspectorate of Environment and Water - Sofia has issued an order to the Mayor of Sofia Municipality to organise the clean-up of the unauthorised waste dumps by 7 May 2026, and to notify the Inspectorate in writing of the actions taken. After this deadline, the Regional Inspectorate of Environment and Water - Sofia will carry out a follow-up inspection and, should the order not have been complied with, administrative penalties will be imposed.

Under the Waste Management Act, the mayor of the municipality is responsible for preventing the unauthorised disposal of waste, as well as for organising the clean-up of illegal landfills. The mayor or a person authorised by him/her exercises control over activities relating to the generation, collection, storage, transport and treatment of waste, including in respect of its unauthorised disposal.
