There is enough water in the complex and significant dams to provide for the basic needs of drinking and irrigation, despite prolonged periods of drought in some areas, according to data from the Ministry of Environment and Water.

“Thanks to precision and prudence in determining the monthly schedules for water use, the MOEW has ensured enough water in the 52 complex and significant dams in the country. The cumulative volume available in the dams amounts to 4.68 billion cubic meters, which is 71% of their total combined volume. Specifically, the volume of water for drinking and household needs is at 86.3% of the total volume for this purposes. No problems with drinking water are expected in any medium-sized or large city,” said Minister of Environment and Water Borislav Sandov.

In Bulgaria, there are still settlements, although smaller in terms of population, that have a water regime or major problems regarding the quality and quantity of drinking water. Losses in the country along the water transmission network average around 60%. “I hope that the Bulgarian Waterworks Holding and local companies will do what is necessary to solve these problems. As a ministry, we finance hundreds of millions of BGN worth of water supply, sewage and water treatment projects for Bulgarian municipalities and water supply companies, but we cannot control them, as they are under the umbrella of the Ministry of Regional Development and Public Works or the relevant municipalities. Faster and more adequate actions are needed in order to guarantee constant availability of quality water for every place of residence, as per the EU legislation”, added Minister Borislav Sandov.
