• For 21 July, the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (NIMH) has issued a first-degree warning (yellow code) for heavy rainfall with thunderstorms and a risk of hail in 14 regions across the country

The total volume of water stored in complex and major dams as of 20 July 2026 is 5014.9 million cubic meters, representing 76.73 % of their total capacity. Dams primarily intended for drinking and domestic water supply are at 88.79 % full of their total capacity; those for reserve drinking and domestic water supply are at 49.37 % full of their total capacity; for irrigation – at 62.27 % of their total volume, and those for power generation – at 82.48 % of their total volume.

The reservoirs ‘Srechenska Bar’, ‘Hristo Smirnenski’, ‘Yovkovtsi’, ‘Kamchia’, ‘Asenovets’, ‘Borovitsa’, ‘Kalin’, ‘Pchelina’, ‘Belmeken’, ‘Vucha’, ‘Krichim’, ‘Kardzhali’, and ‘Ivaylovgrad’ are at more than 90 per cent full. The ‘Pchelina’ and ‘Pancharevo’ dams are overflowing.

According to data from the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (NIMH), on Monday afternoon there will be short showers and thunderstorms in many places. There will also be hailstorms. Rainfall amounts will be up to 10 mm, and in some places in the North-Eastern regions, the Western and Central Balkans and the Rila-Rhodope region, up to 15-20 mm. Overnight, there will be short showers accompanied by thunderstorms in parts of South-Western, central Southern and North-Eastern Bulgaria. The phenomena will be most intense mainly around the Stara Planina mountain range and the far North-Eastern regions. Precipitation totals by morning: 5-10 mm, locally 15-20 mm, and even more in some areas around the Stara Planina mountain range. On Tuesday, there will again be short showers and thunderstorms. Hailstorms are also expected. Precipitation amounts: 5-10 mm, 15-20 mm in the Eastern and mountainous regions, locally up to 30-35 mm.

On Wednesday, there will be rainfall across the whole country, with an increased likelihood that it will be heavy and significant in places in Eastern Bulgaria. Amounts: in the Western half of the country from 1-2 to 10 mm, in the mountains in some places 15-25 mm; in the East 5–25 mm, with amounts of around or exceeding 50 mm in isolated areas. On Thursday, only isolated areas in the Eastern and mountainous regions will see brief showers, with rainfall of up to 5 mm.

Today (20 July) and tomorrow, river levels will remain largely unchanged, although short-term rises in levels are possible as a result of afternoon rainfall. On 22 July, river levels will rise across the whole country. On 23 July, river levels will fall, although rises in river levels are possible in rivers within the Danube, Black Sea, and Eastern Aegean basins as a result of runoff. Water levels will remain below the warning thresholds.
