Minister Asen Lichev declared protected two centuries-old sycamore trees (Platanus hybrid) in front of the Sfumato theater and a yew-tree (Taxus baccata) in the garden of the Regional History Museum of Sofia - the emblematic building of the Central Mineral Bath.

As of today, by order of the Minister of Environment and Water, any action that would lead to the destruction, damage, or deterioration of the physical condition of the trees is prohibited. They will be included in the registers according to the requirements of the Biodiversity Act and marked as centuries-old trees.

Proposals for the protection of centuries-old trees were submitted to the MОEW by the One Tree initiative. Thanks to the fruitful cooperation with the civil organization and the detailed expertise of RIEW-Sofia, the three trees were selected in accord with the criteria for high environmental protection, but also taking into consideration the urban environment of Sofia, with its architectural and historical identity.

Timely and organized protection of urban trees is one of the priorities of the MOEW, which aims to raise public awareness and institutional care about the protection of green urban environment.
