International Black Sea Day is celebrated on 31 October.

On this day in 1996, the Strategic Action Plan for the Restoration and Protection of the Black Sea was signed, whereby the governments of Bulgaria, Turkey, Georgia, Romania, Russia and Ukraine agreed that pollution of our shared sea poses risks to all. The plan is related to the Convention on the Protection of the Black Sea against Pollution (the so-called Bucharest Convention) signed in 1992 by the six Black Sea countries.

International Black Sea Day is aimed to attract public attention to the problems of the basin and ways to protect it as one of the most vulnerable marine ecosystems in the world. Its vitality and resources need to be preserved from intensive human activities.
