Two centuries-old trees – a winter oak and an eastern plane tree, have been declared protected

The Minister of Environment and Water Borislav Sandov declared two centuries-old trees protected. One of them is from the species winter oak (Quersus petraea), 280 years old, 22m high, with a trunk circumference of 4.50 m and is located in the town of Belitsa, Belitsa municipality, Blagoevgrad region. The proposal for its protection was submitted to RIEW-Blagoevgrad by the Territorial Division of the State Forestry in Belitsa.

The second tree is of the eastern plane tree (Platanus orientalis) species, about 150 years old, about 16m high, with trunk circumference of 4.45 m and is located in the village of Mezek, Svilengrad municipality, Haskovo region. The proposal for its protection was submitted to the RIEW-Haskovo by the Municipality of Svilengrad.

Declaring these trees protected prohibits their uprooting, felling, pruning, breaking of branches, damage to stems and any other actions that could lead to their destruction, to damage or deterioration of their physiological condition.

Upon the publication of the orders in the State Gazette, the centuries-old trees will be entered in the registers in accordance with the requirements of the Biodiversity Act and marked.

The protection of centuries-old or remarkable trees through their timely protection is one of the priorities of the MOEW.
