Two centuries-old trees have been declared under protection

The Minister of Environment and Water Manol Genov has declared two centuries-old trees, each of which is approximately 200 years old, protected.

One is a white elm (Ulmus laevis) with a trunk circumference of 4.00 m and a height of about 24 m. It is located on the territory of the city of Pleven. The proposal for the declaration was submitted by the Eco Community Foundation and is supported by the regional governor of Pleven.

The Minister's order also includes a centuries-old oak tree (Quercus cerris) with a trunk circumference of 2.40 m. and a height of about 15 m. The tree is located on the territory of the village of Trunkovo, Stambolovo Municipality, Haskovo Region, and the proposal for its declaration as protected was submitted by the mayor of Stambolovo Municipality, where it is located.

The declaration under protection prohibits to uproot, cut down, prune, break branches, injure the stems and any other actions that would lead to the destruction, damage or deterioration of the physiological condition of the trees.

The order is to be published in the State Gazette, after which the trees will be entered in the registers according to the requirements of the Biodiversity Act and designated as centuries-old trees.

The preservation of centuries-old or remarkable trees through their timely protection is one of the priorities of the Ministry of Environment and Water. A large part of these trees, distinguished by their remarkable shapes and sizes, have withstood time and the natural elements, and have been preserved thanks to the commitment and public awareness of local communities.
