We Mark Earth Day on April 22nd with the Motto “Investing in Our Planet”

On 22nd April, we celebrate Earth Day, which this year, as a continuation of last year’s campaign, is held under the motto “Investing in our planet”. Together we must invest in our planet – that’s the call by the www.EARTHDAY.ORG platform, which coordinates events around the world each year to demonstrate global support for the movement to protect the planet.

Our world needs transformation and this requires action at all levels - public institutions, the business, civil society. Human influence is undoubtedly a major factor in global warming, and forms of climate disruption are likely to be felt for centuries to come. We need to refocus on creating a 21st century economy that restores the health of our planet, protects our species, and provides opportunities for all.

More than 1 billion people in 192 countries are participating in Earth Day activities, making it the largest celebration in the world. Bulgaria has an almost centuries-old tradition of honoring environmental conservation. In December 1930, at the suggestion of the Minister of Agriculture, the first commemoration of this day took place in Bulgaria, and in April 1992, President Zhelyo Zhelev signed a pledge in the name of the Earth, thus our country joined the international Earth Day initiative.

Community organisations and citizens are invited to be part of Earth Day and help further action to tackle climate change. The MOEW, through its regional offices, is joining in the celebration of Earth Day with a variety of activities and initiatives across the country in support of the global environmental movement.
