We mark the World Environment Day on 5 June with the theme “Only One Earth”

05 Jun, 2022 | 10:00

This year World Environment Day - the most important international day of action aimed at protecting the environment, will be held under the theme “Only One Earth” with an emphasis on “living sustainably in harmony with nature.”

2022 is a historic milestone for the global environmental community. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment held in 1972, which is considered the first international meeting on environment. The 1972 Stockholm Conference stimulated the creation of ministries and environmental agencies around the world and launched a number of new global agreements on collective environmental protection. There is continuity with this year’s World Environment Day: 50 years ago, the Stockholm Conference was also held under the motto “One Earth”. The message remains as important today as it was then.

Deputy Prime Minister for Climate Policy and Minister of Environment and Water Borislav Sandov is representing Bulgaria at the Stockholm International Summit +50, which is being held in Sweden on 2 and 3 June 2022 and is dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) by the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment.

“Only One Earth” (hashtags #OnlyOneEarth and #WorldEnvironmentDay) advocates for environmental change worldwide. The campaign focuses on climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution, while encouraging everyone around the world to live in harmony with nature.

The Ministry of Environment and Water is the national coordinator for the campaign in Bulgaria. Detailed information about the initiatives of the regional branches of the Ministry of Environment and Water throughout the country can be found HERE

World Environment Day is coordinated by the United Nations Environment Program and has been held annually since 1974, becoming one of the largest international platforms with millions of people around the world united to protect the planet. With the participation of more than 150 countries this UN International Day engages governments, the private sector, civil society, schools, celebrities, cities and communities, raising awareness and celebrating environmental action.
