On March 22nf we celebrate the World Water Day, which this year coincides with the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the directorates for basin management in Bulgaria. The world day will be under the motto “Groundwater - making the invisible visible”.

The four water basin directorates on the territory of the country are conducting an information campaign on the protection of groundwater, together with the Executive Agency for Environment and Water and the regional inspectorates for environment and water. The campaign marks the beginning of the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the directorates and will continue throughout 2022 with a series of events.

The Deputy Minister of Environment and Water Maria Achkova will be a guest of the Basin Directorate “West Aegean Region”-Blagoevgrad. The celebration will be held in the hall “September 22nd” in the building of the Municipality of Blagoevgrad, on March 22nd, from 11:00h.

World Water Day has been marked annually by the United Nations since 1993 with a focus on the importance of freshwater. The initiative is coordinated by the UN Water Access Mechanism and targets 2 billion people globally who live without access to drinking water. The focus is on taking action to tackle the global water crisis. The main focus of the World Water Day is to support the achievement of Goal 6 of the UN Sustainable Development Agenda: clean water and sanitation for all by 2030.

The 2022 theme focuses on the value of groundwater and what it means to people. Almost all freshwater in the world is groundwater, supporting drinking water supplies, sewage systems, agriculture, industry, and ecosystems. In many places, human activity overuses and pollutes groundwater. Elsewhere, we just don't know how much water there is underground.

Groundwater is invisible, but its impact is visible everywhere. Out of sight, under our feet, groundwater is a hidden treasure that enriches our lives. In the driest parts of the world, this may be the only water people have. Research, conservation, and sustainable use of groundwater are essential for survival and climate change adaptation.

Detailed information about the initiatives of the regional branches of the Ministry of Environment and Water throughout the country will be published under the section “National News” on the website of the ministry.
