"Today is World Environment Day. It is the most significant international day to promote action in protection of the environment.

The message of this year's celebration advocates for environmental change on a global scale, urging people: 'We can be the generation that finally makes peace with the Earth. We can be the generation that restores.’ This requires an approach that harnesses the knowledge, drive and ambition of everyone - government institutions, local authorities, the public sector, the business, civil society. This day is also a professional celebration for all of us who have dedicated our daily efforts to the protection of nature in Bulgaria. This day unites thousands of people around the world around our common cause."

With these words the Minister of Environment and Water Petar Dimitrov greeted the guests of the event organized by the Presidential Institution jointly with Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski" and the Municipality of Balchik, held today at the University Botanical Garden in Balchik.

On the World Environment Day, students from the Third Natural Mathematics High School "Academician Metodiy Popov" - Varna, presented a project for the protection of the cleanliness of the Black Sea to Minister Petar Dimitrov and Minister of Education and Science Prof. Galin Tsokov. The project was organized by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Bulgaria. "Sustainable development and green ideas are strongly embedded in our education," said Minister Tsokov. He stressed that dozens of student clubs are developing various initiatives in this area, including for volunteering.

Gabriela Ivanova, Gabriela Stoykova, and Daria Hadzhidemirova are students from 12b grade of the Varna School of Natural Sciences. As a part of the club "Young Ecologists", they are developing a project related to the study of microplastics in the waters of the Black Sea, as well as its entry into the bodies of marine inhabitants. The initiative is implemented in cooperation with the Institute of Oceanology "Professor Fridtjof Nansen" at the Bulgarian Academy of Science.
