The management of transborder rivers, early warning of flood risks, and the zero-waste policy were the main topics discussed at yesterday’s meeting of Deputy Prime Minister for Climate Policy and Minister of Environment and Water Borislav Sandov and the Ambassador of the Republic of Turkey to Bulgaria H.E. Mrs Aylin Sekizkök.

Ambassador Sekizkök noted the need for the two countries to continue their good cooperation in transborder river management, especially in respect to early warning of the risk of floods, as climate change in recent years has had a serious impact on water levels.

Minister Sandov expressed confidence that the fruitful cooperation between Bulgaria and Turkey will continue to develop and highlighted that issues of transborder water management should be further considered at the expert level and on a case by case basis looking at individual basins. He pointed to the zero-waste policy as an area in which Bulgaria and Turkey could share experience and good practices.

As an area for future cooperation, the good practices of the Republic of Turkey regarding the use of geothermal energy were also discussed. Ambassador Sekizkök expressed her readiness to provide information on the experience gained in this field.

At the end of the meeting, the two sides shared the conviction that issues of common interest will continue to be considered in the spirit of good neighborly relations and mutual respect.
