“Planting this new forest around Sofia protects us from dust, but it is also useful for biodiversity conservation,” said Deputy Prime Minister for Climate Policy and Minister of Environment and Water Borislav Sandov during afforestation near the village of Negovan within the initiative “Active afforestation” by Nestle in partnership with the project of Sofia Municipality “New Forest near Sofia-2”.

Minister Sandov and his wife planted about 100 saplings of cer and winter oak in the New Forest of Sofia, which is located next to the “Malko Negovansko Ezero”, which the Minister recently announced as a new protected area.

“Afforestation with local species is key to clean air, biodiversity, and the fight against climate change. The goal is to have 100 million new trees planted by 2030 and I’m sure we can do it together,” he said.

Minister Sandov pointed out that the new goals of the European Union related to the conservation of natural habitats are an attempt to partially restore what humanity has taken from nature.

The initiative demonstrates in practice how a sustainable future is created through the joint efforts by the executive, local government, the business, and citizens.
