Today the European Commission adopted a decision to close the infringement procedure for non-fulfillment by Bulgaria of obligations under the Floods Directive.

The procedure was launched on October 30, 2020 because the country did not meet the deadline for reviewing and updating the preliminary flood risk assessments, which had to be finalized by December 22, 2018. The deadline for submitting to the Commission the revised preliminary flood risk assessments was by 22 March 2019.

On September 23, 2021, Bulgaria received a reasoned opinion on the violation due to continuing non-fulfillment of these obligations.

In result of actions taken, our commitments were fulfilled and this was reported to the EC at the end of 2021.

In practice, with its decision today, the Commission states its assessment that Bulgaria has fulfilled its obligations and has eliminated EU law violations.
