The Ministry of Environment and Water announced public consultations on the specific and detailed protection objectives for the 13 protected areas within the “Natura 2000” ecological network. The objectives were developed by an expert team headed by the Institute of Biodiversity and Ecosystem Research at the Bulgarian Academy of Science.

Conservation objectives at the level of protected areas are a set of specific objectives that must be met in a given area to ensure, on the one hand, the long-term protection of types of natural habitats and species and, on the other - that the area contributes in the best possible way to achieve or maintain the most favorable condition of the respective types of natural habitat and species in the biogeographical region and the country. These objectives are the basis for determining conservation measures and are based on scientific knowledge and qualitative information on the condition of the area concerned, the species and natural habitats subject to protection, as well as the main impact and threats that may affect them.

Information on the 13 protected areas and detailed information about the specific protection objectives and measures towards their achievement can be found at:

The active participation of all competent authorities, stakeholders, and the general public is key to the establishment of conservation objectives for “Natura 2000” sites.

The team of the Ministry of Environment and Water looks forward to any opinions, proposals, recommendations, and comments by December 18th, 2021 at the following address: Ministry of Environment and Water, 1000 Sofia, 22 Knyaginya Maria Luisa Blvd., as well as by e-mail at edno_gishe@moew.government.bg

The package of documents has been prepared in accord with the Concept approved by the Minister of Environment and Water for the development of specific and detailed protection objectives at the level of protected areas from the “Natura 2000” ecological network. Such objectives have been developed individually for each protected area in implementation of the guidelines of the European Commission for achieving full compliance with the requirements of Directive 92/43/EEC on the conservation of natural habitats and of wild fauna and flora and of Directive 2009/147/EC on the conservation of wild birds.
